SWIM LESSONS

One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy.

At the YMCA of Pawtucket, we understand that swim lessons are more than just stroke development. As they learn to swim, children also develop endurance, self-confidence, and an appreciation for water safety. The Y staff works hard to create an encouraging atmosphere in the water, where each swimmer can learn and progress at his or her own rate and comfort level.

The YMCA wants physical fitness and healthy living to be a part of everyone’s lifestyle. Our state-of-the-art fitness center includes:

  • A variety of Cybex® cardiovascular equipment to help you strengthen your heart, lose weight and feel great, including: Treadmills, Arc Trainers, Upright and Recumbent Bikes.
  • A full line of Cybex® selectorized VR3 and Total Access strength machines.
  • An expanded free weight area featuring Cybex® plate loaded strength, Smith Machine, Power Rack, Squat rack, full jungle gym and 4 Bravo functional trainers.
  • Individual TVs on most cardiovascular equipment to make your workouts more enjoyable.

FITNESS ORIENTATIONS

Meet with one of our Personal Trainers to set your personal fitness goals.  After being led through a consultation, you and the wellness trainer will have the tools necessary to implement an easy to follow fitness program that will help get you started on a successful path. Through the 3-step program with one of our wellness trainers, you’ll identify goals and create a plan for success. During your orientation, a wellness trainer will:

  • Provide you with guidelines for cardiovascular training, strength training and stretching techniques
  • Show you how to safely and effectively use the Cybex® selectorzied equipment.
  • Assist you in finding your personal settings on each machine
  • Answer all of your general fitness questions.

PERSONAL TRAINING

Get personal attention and bring your workout to the next level.  Our Personal Trainers are certified professionals with education and experience.  Your trainer will customize a fitness program to fit your needs, goals and schedule.  Our trainers have the expertise to help you succeed and see the results you have been looking for!  Looking to workout with a friend?  We have Buddy Training options available as well!  Get the motivation from training with a friend and less impact on your wallet!

GROUP EXERCISE

Our Group Exercise classes offer adults opportunities for friendship & community, a sense of well-being, increased self-confidence and improved abilities. With a large variety of classes, our members can change up their routines daily. There is something for every age and ability to try.  We encourage you to check out our complete list of classes offered to find what is right for you.

TEEN WELLNESS

Teen Fitness Orientation: 

For teens up to 17 years old, this free, members-only program is a one-hour orientation session that must be completed before using the wellness center. Once approved, members must request a bracelet from the member services desk prior to each visit to the center.

Youth Strength Training:

This program for YMCA members ages 10 to 12 is comprised of six weekly group exercise sessions focusing on strength training principles, guidelines and techniques as well as the proper use of cardio machines. After participants finish the sessions, they can use the fitness center at designated times when accompanied by an adult.

Children that attend one of the many outstanding day camps at the MacColl YMCA, 32 Breakneck Hill Road will enjoy a spectacular spray park while being supervised and instructed by a well-trained staff. Besides the spray park, MacColl YMCA, which is accredited by the American Camp Association, features a large community swimming pool that includes two water slides and an instructional pool, where children ages 5 to 6 can take swim lessons. Staff members, many of whom are studying to become educators, are certified in CPR and first aid and are required to complete 16-hours of safety training before the start of camp. 

All campers experience swimming, arts and crafts and a several outdoor activities, and there are specialty camps that focus on skills such as dancing and cheerleading. Camps run from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., and there is pre-camp child care, starting at 6:30 a.m., and post-camp care, ending at 5:45 p.m. The costs of the camps vary, and families can apply for financial assistance. Also, transportation to and from MacColl is available for children 6 and over.

ROCKIN’ POOL PARTY

Climb as high as you can and then slide into the pool during this 3 hour party adventure. The rockin pool party will provide you with an hour in your party room, an hour in the rock wall adventure area and an hour in the new activity pool. (3 hour party)

ROCK AND GYM PARTY

Climb as high as you can and then slide into the pool during this 3 hour party adventure. The rockin’ pool party will provide you with an hour in your party room, an hour in the rock wall adventure area and an hour in the Gymnasium. 

½ AND ½ PARTY

Come try a little bit of everything. Party goers get 30 minutes in the gym and 30 minutes in the rock wall before going to your party room for an hour and finishing up with an hour in the pool. Easily our most popular party with the kids and the adults.

GYM & SWIM PARTY

This sports filled party has party goers moving from the beginning of your party to the end. Spend an hour in the activity pool, gymnasium and the party room. Gymnasium activities may include kickball, basketball or volleyball. (3 hour party)

SLIP & SLIDE PARTY 

Make your next birthday party at the MacColl YMCA be a wet one in our new indoor pool. Bring all your friends and have a blast in our designated party room for an hour and then slip over to the pool and enjoy our brand new double loop water slide in our activity pool. (2 hour party).

Party Packages are based on 25 total party guests.

OUTDOOR RENTALS

The MacColl YMCA offers outdoor rental space with access to our Community Pool, Spray Park and Water Slides. Available June 11th through Labor Day, renters will also be provided with a large tent and can choose between use of the soccer field or outdoor basketball courts. ADAPTIVE PROGRAMS (AP)
Adaptive programs are provided to give children with disabilities opportunities to participate in recreational activities. The YMCA will promote a safe, friendly and supportive environment that will help individuals gain confidence, independence and responsibility while socializing and working with others in a smaller class setting with additional staff. PARENT & ME SOCCER
Ages 3 – 5
Parent & Me Soccer is an age- appropriate and field tested curriculum engaging youngsters with entertaining activities that promote motor skill development and cognitive ability. Repeated movements of dribbling, passing and shooting drills with parent aid. Limited game play at the end of each class for team achievement. Cleats and shin guards are not needed but advised.

PARENT & ME BASKETBALL
Ages 3 – 5
Parent & Me Basketball will introduce the basics of passing, shooting and dribbling with the help of the parent. This class will include skill drills and mini games, and will provide a solid basketball foundation.

BEGINNER BASKETBALL
Ages 5 – 8
Basketball skills will focus on passing, shooting and dribbling. Drills, team play and mini games will look to keep players alert and interested as they learn to practice and play the right way.

T.O.O.O.L.S.
Ages 5 – 17
TOOOLS is a True One On One Lesson Series. Let the Y fine tune your child’s passion. Private lesson time dedicated to the understanding of the sport and the development of skill. Series will be offered in a 3 or 6 lesson package and will meet for 1 hour. Times and days to be determined by the coaching staff. Currently available for Basketball and Soccer.

Y MARTIAL ARTS
Ages 6 and Up
Martial Arts will be offered to children and adults twice a week for 6 weeks. Martial arts is an ancient method of training your mind, body and spirit to act as one. Focuses on concentration, pride, repetition, self-control and maintaining a healthy mind, body and spirit.

PICK UP & PLAY FLAG FOOTBALL
Ages 6 – 12
The rules to flag football are nearly identical to regular tackle football, except that each player wears a belt of flags around his or her waist. Pick Up & Play Flag Football consists of passing, running, defense and game time. Learn the game while having fun in an organized, low pressure setting.

ART AND CRAFTS
Ages 6 -12
Kids get a chance to express themselves in different ways and through different art mediums. Participants are taught basic art and artistic forms. Creative design will be matched with drawing, illustration, crafts and 3D creations. Basic drawing and painting supplies will be provided to students. Students are encouraged to bring a large pad to develop creative ideas as they begin the growth of a personal portfolio. Sign up today!

INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED BASKETBALL SKILLS
Ages 8 – 12
This basketball skills program moves the beginners up to the next level. Intermediate Basketball skills gets them ready for game play with faster moving drills to develop a larger foundation for the game. Dribbling, passing, shooting and mini games will improve the players overall game skill with intermediate practice sessions. Increase your knowledge and fundamental skills of the game of basketball.

FISHING BUDDIES
Ages 8 and up
Fishing and being near the water provides an excellent opportunity to teach kids about their environment and natural resources in the area. This six week program is hands-on and teaches fishing skills accompanied by lessons in lure making, fish species, tackle choices and techniques. Rod and reel not required. Anglers will travel to local fishing holes. Please wear proper footwear and seasonal attire.

COOKING FOR FUN
Ages 8 – 12 
Come and see what you can make and bake while cooking for fun! Each week students will have the chance to create something delicious and decadent. Cakes, confections, jellies, jams, cookies or candies may be on your cooking list. Students will also learn about portions and healthy choices.

ONE ON ONE YOUTH STRENGTH TRAINING
Ages 10 – 12
This class, for 10-12 year olds is ideal for youth that cannot commit to the session times for the Youth Strength Training class. 1 on 1 Youth Strength Training will give members the flexibility to work directly with their trainer to schedule their 6 private one hour lessons. Upon completion of the program, youth will be permitted to use the fitness center when accompanied by a parent during age appropriate times. Note this class is not Youth Personal Training.

YOUTH STRENGTH TRAINING
Ages 10 – 12
Would you like to get your child started on the right path to fitness? This class will focus on learning strength training principles, guidelines, and techniques in the wellness center. During each class, students will learn the proper use of the cardio and Cybex® selectorized machines. The class will incorporate basic muscle anatomy in an interactive and supportive group environment. Upon completion of the program, youth will be permitted to use the fitness center when accompanied by a parent during age appropriate times. Class meets once a week for 6 weeks. Class size is limited to 6 participants.

TEEN FITNESS ORIENTATION
Ages 13 – 17
Teens between the ages of 13-17 years old that are interested in using the wellness center are required to attend a 1-hour fitness orientation prior to using the MacColl Y Wellness Center. The orientation will teach teens how to properly use the equipment and review the Wellness Center rules. Once approved, members ages 13-17 must request a bracelet from the Membership Desk each visit prior to entering the wellness center. This bracelet must be worn on the wrist so that staff can easily identify approved teen members. All orientations are by appointment. Please stop by the fitness center to set up your orientation.

5TH GRADE NIGHTS
This is a fun night out with your 5th grade friends. The night will consist of activities including a variety of sports, games, and movies. These are held the first Saturday of the month.

LEADERS CLUB
A Leaders Club is a group of teens in 6th through 12th grade organized for the purpose of developing youth as leaders and fostering a culture of service. It is also organized for the purpose of providing its members with knowledge and training that will help them to better serve others and to shape a healthy lifestyle themselves. Activities may happen on some Saturdays but Leaders will have advanced knowledge.

TEEN STRENGTH TRAINING
Weight training education for teens ages 13 and up. This class will teach proper form, workout variations, core strength, and weight room etiquette. Meet with a personal trainer for one hour each week for six consecutive weeks. Class size is limited to 4 participants to keep focus on form, control and progression.

TEEN NIGHTS AT THE BARN
6th Grade and up
MacColl YMCA is the place where teens want to hang out! Join our Teen Night crew on Friday nights for a variety of activities that YOU choose! Play flag football under the lights, basketball and dodge ball in the gym, climb our rock wall or even jump into the indoor pool! The possibilities are endless for what you play or do.

The MacColl YMCA has several sports and recreation programs for adults who want to stay in shape and enjoy the camaraderie of league play.

Free adult wellness programs include the high-intensity X-Fit, Boot Camp, Group Cycle and Turbo Kick. In addition, adults can purchase personal training packages; participate in small group and buddy training sessions; take the first step to fitness with a health assessment. Other offerings for adults include:

Men’s Basketball League: There is an A league for players with college to pro experience and a B league for recreational players. Participants are encouraged to assemble a squad of individuals of similar ability. There is a team fee of $500.

30+ Men’s Basketball League: $60 for member/non: All Skills Welcomed! Tuesday nights beginning at 7pm Season begins on October 18th with an open scrimmage at 7pm

Zumba: YMCA members can dance their way to fitness, using principles of interval training that tone and sculpt the body. The program is free.

Whether you’re a senior citizen trying to get into shape or an older adult that needs a class to stay in good physical condition, the MacColl YMCA has programs to assist you with achieving your goals.  

One of those programs is Slow Flow Yoga, which is taught at a slower pace to help students find beneficial alignment and nourish­ment in each pose. The sessions will offer challenges for those seeking to deepen their yoga practice and modifications for people working with injuries and other limitations. Participants need to bring their own Pilates/yoga mat. 

Another program is Prescribe the Y: Fit for Life, which is a chronic disease prevention program. The 12-week, twice a week exercise program is geared toward adults at a high risk for developing heart and/or metabolic diseases. The program is based on the concept that physical fitness is a form of preventative treatment that can foster a lifetime of health and well-being. Participants are given the tools necessary to change harmful behaviors and lead an active and healthy lifestyle. To enroll, people must be overweight with a body mass index greater than 25 and score moderate to high on a risk factor analysis. Such factors could include an elevated cholesterol level, a family history of certain diseases and high blood pressure. Interested parties should contact Health and Wellness Director Shana McElroy. 

Hatha flow yoga is a traditional program for the beginner to the expert. It is designed to increase strength, balance, flexibility and confidence while encouraging relaxation. 

PROGRAMS EXCLUSIVE TO YMCA MEMBERS ARE:  

FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH

Use your own body weight, weights, and stability balls, to gain strength, stabilize joints, increase flexibility, add balance, and relieve pain to increase mobility for daily life. 

PICKLEBALL 

Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. No experience is necessary – bring your willingness to have fun and we will learn all the rules together. 

AOA STRETCH

This Active Older Adults class is designed to promote flexibility, balance, and muscular endurance. A variety of exercise will be performed working various muscle groups within the body all while listening to relaxing music.

In addition, senior citizens can dive into one of the adult aquatic programs conducted in the MacColl YMCA’s new spacious pool. The low-impact programs include Water Aerobics, Aqua-Fit, Rest and Rejuvenation, Strength & Stretching and Water Walking.

Child Watch is a feature of the Y youth programming that offers a variety of supervised activities for children while their parents exercise and stay active.  We also provide the same age-appropriate activities available to youth members.

Caring, experienced, and trained staff are available to care for your children while you are participating in a program or utilizing our facility.  Care is limited to 2 hours per day. This benefit is for our family memberships.

Sat: 9am – 11:30am (no Sunday older kids child watch)

Older Child Watch offers age appropriate activities for school age children.  Our staff will offer enrichment opportunities and utilize other portions of the building such as the pool, rock wall and gymnasium. Children may stay in child watch a maximum of 2 hours.
