Westwood YMCA PROGRAMS

For more than 160 years, the YMCA has nurtured potential and united communities across America to create lasting, meaningful change. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy.

At the YMCA of Pawtucket, we understand that swim lessons are more than just stroke development. As they learn to swim, children also develop endurance, self-confidence, and an appreciation for water safety. The Y staff works hard to create an encouraging atmosphere in the water, where each swimmer can learn and progress at his or her own rate and comfort level.

If you love to swim, boat, hike, fish, camp, or just breath in fresh clean air, Westwood YMCA is the place for you and your family! With 80 acres of heavily-wooded land carefully preserved for camping, hiking, and day camp activities as well as nearly 300 acres of pristine water for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and sailing, visitors always find something exciting to do. The facility also rents camper sites and cabins during the summer season. For more information, call (401) 397-7779.

Children that attend one of Westwood YMCA’s summer camps will get to enjoy innovative programming in a beautiful setting that consists of 80 acres of heavily wooded land preserved for camping and hiking and the expansive and pristine Quidnick Reservoir used for activities such as swimming, fishing and boating.

The day camps are ideal for children age 5 and older. Free transportation is offered for children residing in Coventry, Exeter, West Greenwich, West Warwick and Sterling, CT. Camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and there is complimentary pre-camp child care, starting at 6:30 a.m., and post-camp care, ending at 6 p.m. Camps are available for members and non-members. Families can apply for financial assistance and sibling discounts.

Camp Rainbow is for children entering kindergarten through grade 2. Campers learn about healthy lifestyles and engage in activities to increase their social, emotional and physical development.

Camp Exploration is for children entering grades 3 to 5, who learn new skills such as boating and archery while improving their swimming ability with daily lessons.

Camp Adventure is for children entering grades 6 to 8, who concentrate on swimming and plan activities to develop leadership skills and build character.

Travel Camp is for children entering grades 4 to 8. Enrollees spend three days a week exploring different destinations, including beaches, and two days at Westwood participating in adventurous activities. There is a weekly activity fee.

Sports Camp is an exciting option for children entering grades 3 to 8. A specific sport is covered each week, and experienced instructors work with participants in the morning to improve their skills. In the afternoon, campers enjoy traditional activities such as swimming and boating. There is a weekly activity fee.

Specialty Camp is where children entering grades 3 to 8 can experience self-expression. The specialty is addressed the first half of each day, and campers participate in traditional activities for the rest of the day.

The Westwood YMCA is pleased to announce our new CIT/LIT program. It is designed to help young individuals develop leadership skills while still enjoying the camp experience. The program fee is $380 for the four week program and acceptance into the program will require the full four week commitment. Individuals will need to complete the application, submit narrative answers in typed form and have two letters of recommendation. They will also be required to interview with the program director or unit leaders.
